Ted Gahl (b. 1983, U.S.) develops a distinctive painterly language by reworking fragments of personal memory and everyday life at the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Drawing on visual cues such as spontaneous napkin sketches, faded photographs, and distorted Google Maps images, he layers and removes acrylic, graphite, and colored pencil to create a subtle tension between form and ground. Balancing reverence for classical painting with a wry melancholy, his works evoke the atmosphere of a faintly remembered scene.
