Rinus Van de Velde

Rinus Van de Velde explores circular narratives in virtual, actual, and parallel universes through paintings, installations, sculptures, and films. He builds a unique artistic universe in each work, based on primary historical sources such as photographs he took or collected, images clipped from the media, and documentation of historical figures. In particular, the work in which a character with a similar appearance to the artist draws on the concepts of doppelgänger and parallel universe to expand his artistic practice and explore the expandability of paintings.

His work features a structure that combines an upper image and lower text, drawing inspiration from traditional media layouts, reminiscent of newspapers. By utilising this classic design, he encourages viewers to rethink the realities depicted in his paintings and to explore the allegory between the image and the text continually. The sentences at the bottom of Van de Velde’s drawings serve as a foundation for an independent narrative, resembling a contemplative monologue by the artist.

In the early stages of his practice, the artist primarily presented black charcoal drawings characterised by swift brushwork and an active emphasis on the material’s inherent qualities. Subsequently, he expanded his artistic universe through extensive work across drawings, installations, sculptures, and films. Notably, the films have been continuously produced since 2019 and are set in entirely fictional spaces constructed as full-scale sets within the artist’s studio. The films feature the artist’s alter ego, metaphorically suggesting that the narrative within is autobiographical fiction, thus implicitly revealing Van de Velde’s artistic world. The artist has been pursuing a sustained exploration of form and materials over recent years, placing significant emphasis on color drawings using colored pencils and oil pastels, whilst also introducing new standing sculptures featuring color applied to cardboard.

Rinus Van de Velde lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. He received his master degrees at Sint Lucas Antwerpen in 2006 and at HISK (Hoger Instituut Voor Schone Kunsten – Vlaanderen) in 2010. 리너스 반 데 벨데는 회화, 설치, 조각, 영상 등 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 가상과 실제, 평행우주 안의 무한한 개연성에 대하여 끊임없이 탐구해 왔다. 작가는 직접 촬영하거나 수집한 사진, 매체에서 클리핑 한 이미지나 역사적 인물의 삶에 대한 기록 등 일차적 사료를 기반으로 각 작품 속 독특한 세계관을 구축한다. 특히, 작가와 유사한 용모의 인물이 등장하는 작업은 도플갱어, 평행우주 개념을 작품 세계에 끌어들이며 회화의 확장성을 모색한다.

반 데 벨데의 작품은 신문 매체와 같은 고전적인 미디어 레이아웃을 차용한 듯한 상부 이미지와 하단 텍스트 조합의 구조가 특징이다. 이 전통적인 레이아웃의 차용은 창작의 결과물이 실체적 사건을 기반으로 한 것처럼 느끼게 하는데, 이는 작가가 묘사하는 상황에 현실감을 제고하고 이미지와 텍스트 간의 알레고리를 계속 유추해 보도록 이끈다. 하단에 위치한 텍스트는 이미지를 부연하는 듯 하지만, 많은 경우 독립적인 서사의 단초가 되며 작가가 관조적으로 던지는 독백과도 같이 기능한다.

작업 초기에는 빠른 필치와 재료의 특징을 적극 드러내는 방식의 목탄화를 주로 선보였다면 작가는 이후 회화, 설치, 조각, 영상을 폭넓게 수용하며 작품 세계의 확장을 이룬다. 특히 2019년 초연되어 지속적으로 제작되고 있는 영상 작품들은 작가 스튜디오에서 실물 크기의 사이즈로 세트 제작된, 완전한 가상의 공간을 배경으로 한다. 영상에는 작가의 또 다른 자아(alter ego)가 등장하며 영상 속 내러티브가 자전적인 픽션임을 은유하는데, 이는 반 데 벨데의 작품의 지향점을 함축적으로 보여준다. 작가는 근 몇 년간 색연필과 오일 파스텔을 사용한 컬러 드로잉을 비중 있게 진행하는 한편, 판지에 채색을 더한 스탠딩 조각 작업을 새롭게 선보이는 등 형식과 재료에 관한 지속적인 탐구를 이어가고 있다.
