Minyoung Choi
Minyoung Choi enhances the surreal atmosphere by dramatically framing the edited scenes in a multi-layered structure that transcends time and space with her unique expression of light and color. As in the Dépaysement technique, countless images drawn from the artist’s experiences and psychological emotion are combined with a provocative imagination to break down the boundaries of reality. She creates her own fantasy in which the familiar and the strange overlap in a paradoxical way, arbitrarily borrowing from Eastern and Western myths, fables and common oral stories. Memories and imagination are intertwined with a sense of anxiety and chaos, leading to an ephemeral inner landscape, where space and place, human and animal, city and nature merge to form a new world.
Minyoung Choi’s paintings are full of imaginative energy, creating a dream-like mood through the expression of unpredictable compositions that emphasise the uniqueness of color and light. She ingeniously introduces thought-provoking elements into her images, beckoning contemplation on the complex rapport between imagination and tangible truth. By depicting herself and her surroundings that had isolated in an unfulfilled relationship in her hazy moment of unconsciousness, as an everyday life in which mysterious creatures coexist, she builds up her own fictional narrative that experiences an escape from a peaceful yet tedious life. This unfamiliarity in her works symbolises an understanding and acceptance of relationships and a balance between the inner mind and the outer environment through the interplay of darkness and light, the contrast of complementary colours or the flat spatial composition that blurs the boundary between inside and outside.
Minyoung Choi lives and works in London. She received a BFA and an MFA from Seoul National University and an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art. She has held solo exhibitions at Space K in Seoul (2024); Hive Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing (2023), Olvera Contemporary Art Centre (2017) and participated in group exhibitions at Sixi Museum in Nanjing(2023); Daejeon Creative Center of Daejeon Museum of Art (2023). Choi was awarded the Next Generation Art Prize at the 2018 Wells Art Contemporary Award and was selected for residencies at the Slade Summer School and the Olvera Contemporary Art Centre in 2017. Her works are included in the collections of the HSBC Art Collection, London, UK and X Museum, Beijing, China.
최민영은 시공간이 초월된 다층적 구조 속에서 편집된 장면들을 작가 고유의 빛과 색으로 드라마틱하게 표현하며 초현실적 무드를 극대화한다. 개인적 경험과 관조적 감정에서 발췌된 무수한 이미지들은 데페이즈망(Dépaysement) 기법과 같이 도발적인 상상과 결합되어 현실의 제약을 허문다. 동서양 신화, 우화, 구전이야기 등을 임의로 차용하는 작가는 익숙함과 반전이 역설적으로 중첩되는 자신만의 판타지를 만들어 낸다. 기억과 상상은 불안과 혼돈의 감각으로 정리되어 아득한 내면의 풍경을 향하고, 그 안에서 공간과 장소, 인간과 동물, 도시와 자연이 결합된 새로운 세계가 완성된다.
최민영의 작품은 상상력이 넘치는 에너지로 가득 차 있다. 작가는 무의식에 존재하는 아련한 시간들을 떠올리고, 성장하지 않은 관계 속 고립된 자신과 주변인을 신비로운 생명체가 공생하는 일상의 모습으로 묘사해 평화로움 속의 일탈을 경험하는 허구적 내러티브를 발전시켰다. 이질적인 요소들이 조화를 이루는 이러한 생경함은 어둠과 빛의 상호작용, 보색의 대비, 또는 안 밖의 경계가 흐려진 평면적 공간 구성을 통해 내면과 외면의 균형, 관계의 이해와 포용을 암시하고 있다.
최민영은 서울대학교 및 동 대학원 서양화과를 졸업했다. 영국 슬레이드 미술학교에 서 석사 과정을 마친 후 현재 런던에 머무르며 활동하고 있다. 스페이스 K 미술관 (Space K, 2024) 웨일스 챕터 아트 센터의 아트 인 더 바(Art in the Bar, Chapter Arts Centre, 2017), 올베라 현 대미술센터(Olvera Contemporary Art Centre, 2017)에서 개인전을 개최했고, 난징 쓰시 미술관(Sixi Museum, 2023), 대전시립미술관 대전창작센터(2023), 난 징 지 미술관(G Museum of Art, 2022) 등의 전시에 참여해왔다. 최민영의 작품은 영국 HSBC 아트컬렉션(HSBC Art Collection), 중국 베이징 엑스 미술관(X Museum) 등에 소장돼 있다.
