BEAK Jungki (b. 1981) delves profoundly into the essence of materials and specific subjects of

interest are explored through deep research and scientific experimentation. His in-depth

explorations are visualized through a hands-on-approach conducted personally by the artist. BEAK

Jungki’s studio is like a scientist’s laboratory or a small version of a well-organized factory. He is an

artist who demonstrates extraordinary creativeness by exploring the attitudes of humans towards

nature, the environment of the past and the future, old culture of superstition, and today’s science

and technology as well as philosophy. He scientifically approaches the surrounding environment but

also researches on Shamanism, rituals of the East and the West, people’s beliefs and their reliance

on supernatural powers as well as nature’s invisible energy. All these factors are put together to

produce his own unique artistic creation, in works where candles wish for the birth of a baby chick,

a generator that produces energy, an incubator the hatches the eggs and much more. His scientific

explorations reflects on the explorations on the relationship between human beings and nature, and

deals with the occurrence and flow of energy.

BEAK Jungki studied sculpture in Kookmin University, Korea, and carried on his education in fine art

at Glasgow School of Art, UK. From 2006 until 2023, he has held 12 solo exhibitions, at Alt Space

Loop and OCI Museum just to name a few. From 2004 until now he has participated in many

museum exhibitions in Korea, such shows held at The National Museum of Modern and

Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Amore Pacific Museum of Art, Ulsan Art Museum,

Songeun Art Museum, Leeum, Nam June Paik Art Center, Posco Art Museum and Daegu Art

Museum. He has also participated in many group shows internationally in Denmark, Netherlands,

Germany, UK, Italy, USA, Venezuela, Israel, China, Singapore and Hong Kong. In 2012 he was

awarded the Songeun Art Award, 2019 the Kimsechoong Art Prize for sculpture, and in 2023 IFVA

Media Art Gold Award, Hong Kong Arts Center. His works are in public collections such as the

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Busan and

Ulsan Art Museum in Korea.

백정기(b. 1981)는 재료의 본질에 대한 연구와 구제적인 관심 주제들에 대해 탐구한다. 백정기의 작업 세

계는 이러한 연구를 과학적 실험과 예술적 결과물로 이어지는 작업을 작가가 다양한 방식을 통해 손수

만들어 가는 과정과 시각화되는 결과물을 보여준다. 백정기 작가의 작업실은 마치 과학자의 실험실, 혹

은 잘 정리된 작은 규모의 공장과 같다. 그는 과거부터 미래를 향한 인류의 환경에 대한 태도를 탐구하고

자연환경, 미신으로 일컬어지는 옛 문화 등을 지금의 과학기술 및 철학과 연관시키면서 놀라운 예술적

창의력을 발휘해온 작가다. 이러한 환경을 바라보는 시선은 기우제를 준비하는 동서양의 샤머니즘에 대

한 연구, 인간과 믿음과 그것의 주술적인 힘, 눈에 보이지 않는 자연의 에너지의 흐름을 과학적인 접근방

식으로 접근하여 예술적인 결과물을 만들어낸다. 병아리의 탄생을 기원하는 촛불과 그 촛불로부터 실제

전시에너지를 생산하는 발전기, 전기를 공급받아 병아리를 부활시키는 부화기와 같은 작품은 이와 같이

그의 과학적인 탐구, 정신과 물질, 인간과 자연의 관계, 에너지의 발생과 흐름을 다룬다.

백정기는 2004년 국민대학교에서 입체미술을 전공한 후 2008년 영국 글라스고 미술학교에서 순수미술

을 전공하였다. 2006년부터 2023년까지 대안공간루프, OCI 미술관 등에서 12회의 개인전을 개최하였으

며, 2004년부터 현재까지 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 아모레퍼시픽미술관, 울산시립미술관, 송은

아트스페이스, 리움미술관, 백남준 아트센터, 포스코미술관, 대구미술관 등 국공립미술관의 기획전에 다

수 참여하였으며, 덴마크, 네덜란드, 독일, 영국, 이탈리아, 미국, 베네수엘라, 이스라엘, 중국, 싱가포르,

홍콩 등 국제적인 무대에서 활동하였다. 2012년 송은미술대상, 2019년 김세중 청년조각상, 2023년 홍콩

아트센터 IFVA 미디어아트 금상을 수상하였고, 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 부산현대미술관, 울산시립

미술관 등에 소장되어있다.
