THEO will host Mio Yamato’s solo exhibition, 『Under my skin』 from February 14 to March 22, 2025.

Mio Yamato (b. 1990, Japan) was born in Shiga, Japan, in 1990 and is currently based in Kyoto. She earned her MFA from Kyoto University of Art and Design. Yamato has participated in numerous exhibitions and projects, primarily in Japan, and has recently participated in an artist residency program at Casa Wabi in Mexico. She also had her solo show in Connecticut, USA. Her works have been acquired by museums in Japan, marking her as one of the promising emerging artists to watch. In the early stages of her career, Yamato developed the DOT and LINE series, focusing on the project composed of simple and minimal elements such as dots and lines. Her works reflect themes of life itself, drawing inspiration from the behavior of cells, the accumulation of geological layers, and the growth rings of trees.

In recent years, her practice has expanded to explore themes of existence and life through time, perception, and phenomena encountered on Earth. This has given rise to series such as Breath, which captures traces of respiration in two-dimensional spaces, and Spectrum, an exploration of the play and presence of natural light. This exhibition focuses on Under my skin, one of her diverse series, and marks Yamato’s first solo exhibition in South Korea. Under my skin is a series that begins with observing her blood cells under an optical microscope. By studying the changing forms of blood cells over time and under different physical conditions, Yamato depicts the rich diversity of life and activity within the human body. The works in this series feature collages of blood cells observed under various magnifications and circumstances recreated with paint on canvas. These visuals, reminiscent of microbial chains or a star-filled night sky, suggest a connection between the microcosm and macrocosm of life and existence. Additionally, the exhibition will debut a new series titled a drop of blood, which delves into the various phases and transitions of a single drop of blood. A large-scale installation using organza to depict images from Under my skin will also be presented. Artist Statement

Under my skin is an exploration of life’s shared vitality through the blood motif, aiming to depict our intricate world. Blood, which sustains our lives, circulates ceaselessly through our bodies, delivering nutrients and oxygen to every tissue. Red blood cells, numbering approximately 200 billion per day, are constantly renewed to fulfil this essential role. I observe a single drop of blood under a microscope. Fresh blood is filled with plump, round cells that flow gracefully. This dynamic beauty evokes a profound connection to the natural world—like the river’s flow, the dappled sunlight through trees, the surface of the Earth, and the stars shining in distant galaxies—all interconnected as part of a greater whole. I am deeply moved by the idea that such vast landscapes can be imagined from a single drop of blood. Drawing on this sense of wonder, I capture countless images of blood cells under varying magnifications and time-lapse conditions, compiling these into collages. Each cell is meticulously painted in red, layer by layer. Your blood and mine both carry the history of life. This history includes memories of conflict, but it also binds us together inextricably. Blood continually regenerates through metabolic cycles, undergoing endless transformation.

I invite you to imagine this world connected through blood. Reflect on the ever-evolving future that changes incrementally over time, like metabolism. For this exhibition, THEO’s gallery space will be transformed into an infinite cosmic realm, showcasing works exclusively from the Under my skin series.

THEO는 2025년 2월 14일부터 3월 22일까지 미오 야마토의 개인전 『Under my skin』을 개최합니다.

미오 야마토는 1990년 일본 시가현에서 태어나 현재 교토를 기반으로 활동하는 현대미술 작가입니다. 그녀의 초기 작업에는 점과 선과 같은 간결하고 최소 단위의 요소를 중첩한 DOT(점) 과 LINE(선) 시리즈를 발표하며, 세포의 움직임, 지층의 퇴적, 나무의 나이테와 같은 생명 활동 자체를 주제로 한 작품을 제작해 왔습니다. 최근에는 호흡의 흔적을 평면 공간에 담아낸 Breath 시리즈, 자연광의 변화와 존재를 포착하려는 시도인 Spectrum 시리즈 등, 삶과 존재에 대한 깊은 고찰을 중심으로 시간, 지각, 그리고 지구상의 다양한 현상과 사건을 주제로 한 다채로운 시리즈를 전개하고 있습니다. 이번 전시는 이러한 다양한 시리즈 중에서도 Under my skin에 초점을 맞춘 전시로, 그녀가 한국에서 처음으로 선보이는 개인전입니다. Under my skin은 작가 자신의 혈액 세포를 광학 현미경으로 관찰하는 데서 시작되는 시리즈입니다. 채혈 후 시간이 지남에 따라 또는 건강 상태에 따라 다양한 변화를 보여주는 세포의 모습을 관찰하며, 인간 내부에도 다양한 생명 형태와 활동이 존재함을 작품으로 그려냅니다.

이 시리즈에서는 서로 다른 배율과 조건에서 관찰된 혈액 세포를 캔버스에 물감을 사용해 콜라주 형식으로 재현하고 있습니다. 미생물의 연속이나 별들이 흩어진 밤하늘을 연상시키는 이 장면들은 우리의 생명과 존재가 미시적 관점과 거시적 관점에서 연결되어 있음을 암시합니다. 또한, 이번 전시에서는 Under my skin에서 파생된 신작 “A drop of blood”도 함께 공개됩니다. 한 방울의 혈액이 가진 다양한 양상과 변화를 주제로 한 의욕적인 작품입니다. 더불어, Under my skin의 이미지를 organza(오간자_투명하고 얇은 천)그려낸 대형 설치 작품도 전시될 예정입니다. 다양한 세계의 양상이 교차하는 이번 전시 공간에서, 많은 분들이 작품을 통해 새로운 감각을 경험하시기를 바랍니다.

Artist Statement

Under my skin은 혈액을 모티브로 삼아, 복잡한 세계 속에서 살아가는 우리 모두가 공유하는 생명의 활동을 그려내려는 시도입니다. 우리의 생명을 유지하는 혈액은 끊임없이 몸속을 순환하며, 각 조직에 영양과 산소를 전달합니다. 적혈구는 매일 약 2천억 개라는 방대한 숫자가 새롭게 생성되며 이 중요한 역할을 지속적으로 수행합니다. Under my skin을 제작하기 위해, 저는 한 방울의 혈액을 현미경으로 관찰합니다. 신선한 혈액은 통통하고 둥근 세포들로 가득 차 있으며, 마치 흘러가는 듯한 움직임을 보입니다. 그 모습은 매우 아름다워, 저는 자연과의 연결을 강렬하게 느낍니다. 예를 들어, 강의 흐름, 햇빛과 나뭇잎 사이로 비치는 빛, 지구의 표면, 그리고 먼 은하 속에서 빛나는 별들까지—모든 것이 하나로 연결되어 있는 것처럼 느껴집니다. 한 방울의 혈액에서 이렇게도 웅장한 풍경을 상상할 수 있다는 사실에 저는 깊은 감동을 받습니다. 이러한 상상력을 바탕으로, 혈액 세포가 다양한 배율과 시간의 변화 속에서 어떻게 변하는지를 방대한 사진으로 기록하고, 그것들을 콜라주합니다. 이후 모든 세포를 붉은 물감을 사용해 정성껏 그려냅니다. 당신과 나의 혈액에는 생명을 둘러싼 역사가 새겨져 있습니다. 그 역사에는 갈등의 기억도 존재하지만, 동시에 우리는 혈액을 통해 강하게 연결되어 있습니다. 혈액은 매일 대사를 반복하며 끊임없이 새롭게 태어납니다. 당신도 이 혈액이 연결하는 세계를 잠시 상상해 보시길 바랍니다. 그리고 대사가 이루어지듯 조금씩 변화해 나갈 미래에 대해서도 말입니다. 이번 전시에서는 THEO 갤러리 공간을 무한한 우주 공간으로 상정하고, Under my skin이라는 제목의 작품들로만 구성하였습니다.
