The sun, the moon, and the Earth revolving in between all light begins and ends within these three orbits. Eunju Kim’s exhibition The Sun to The Moon emerges from her contemplation on the movement of light, the revolution of time, and the interconnectedness of all existence. From the sun’s rays that illuminate the moon to the light that gently enters our eyes, Kim explores light as a medium that connects spaces and a language that inscribes time. For her, light is not merely a physical phenomenon but a rhythm of perception and awareness. This exhibition is a poetic attempt to visualize that rhythm the orbiting time of light itself.

 

Eunju Kim’s paintings extend beyond the tranquil horizontality shown in her earlier exhibition Blue Horizon, developing a broader circulation of light and a circuit of sensory experience. Translating the reflections and waves of physical light into painterly language, Kim explores the temporality of color across the surface. The new works: Flow, Romance, Glow, Breath, and Serenity—each capture a distinct temperature of time and texture of emotion. The light that seeps through her brush turns, fades, and returns again along the path of revolution; within this repetition, the viewer senses their own internal rhythm of circulation.

 

Kim’s practice resonates with the aesthetic lineage of the Light and Space movement that emerged on the U.S. West Coast in the 1960s. Artists such as James Turrell, Robert Irwin, and Dan Flavin placed light, space, and perception at the core of their art, prioritizing experience and sensory structure over material form. Eunju Kim reinterprets this approach within the painterly dimension. Like Olafur Eliasson, who expands perception through light, air, and water, Kim works through layers of color, time, and space to propose a perception that reaches beyond the visible world. In parallel with Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception, her paintings become fields where sensation transforms into thought. For Kim, light is not simply what illuminates—it is the very condition that allows seeing. Through that condition, she invites the viewer to feel the rhythm of their inner world and the breath of the universe.

 

Ultimately, The Sun to The Moon is a meditation on the circular flow of light that connects the self and the world. The journey of light from the sun to the moon and back to humankind suggests that all beings exist within one continuous breath. Through this rhythm of circulation, Kim visualizes the time of revolution and invites the viewer to encounter their own inner light. This exhibition becomes a sensory bridge between the visible and invisible, the material and immaterial, the self and the other a place where we are reborn as beings that reflect light to one another.

 

Eunju Kim’s The Sun to The Moon revolves around the themes of orbit, cycle of light, and connectivity, offering a poetic exploration of how contemporary painting mediates between perception, time, and existence. Her work represents an expansion of painting after the Light and Space movement, translating phenomenological experiences of light into visual language. The light within her paintings is not fixed; it shifts and transforms with the viewer’s gaze and movement. Through this fluidity, Kim constructs a painting of perception an aesthetic process in which sensation becomes thought, vision becomes time, and experience turns into memory. Within this orbit, we come to re-perceive both the world and ourselves.

태양과 달, 그리고 그 사이를 도는 지구. 모든 빛의 시작과 끝은 이 세 개의 궤도 안에서 순환한다. 이번 전시 『The Sun to The Moon』은 빛의 흐름과 시간의 공전, 그리고 존재들의 연결성에 대한 사유에서 출발한다. 김은주 작가는 태양으로부터 시작된 빛이 달을 비추고, 다시 인간의 눈으로 스며드는 과정 속에서 빛이 ‘공간을 잇는 매개’이자 ‘시간을 새기는 언어’임을 탐구한다. 작가에게 빛은 물리적 현상이 아니라 감각과 인식의 리듬이며, 이 전시는 그 리듬을 따라 ‘공전하는 시간’을 시각화한 시적 시도이다.

김은주의 회화는 이전의 『푸른 수평』에서 보여준 고요한 수평의 정서를 넘어서, 이번 전시에서는 보다 확장된 빛의 순환과 감각의 회로를 구축한다. 작가는 물리적 빛의 반사와 파동을 회화적 언어로 번역하며, 화면 위에서 색의 시간성을 탐구한다. ‘Flow’, ‘Romance’, ‘Glow’, ‘Breath’, ‘Serenity’ 등 이번 신작들은 각기 다른 시간의 온도와 감정의 결을 담은 빛의 순간들이다. 그녀의 붓끝에서 스며든 빛은 공전의 궤도를 따라 돌고, 사라지고, 다시 돌아오며, 그 반복 속에서 관객은 자신만의 내면적 순환을 감각하게 된다.

『The Sun to The Moon』은 결국, 나와 세계를 연결하는 빛의 순환에 대한 이야기다. 태양에서 달로, 다시 인간에게로 이어지는 빛의 흐름은 모든 존재가 하나의 호흡으로 이어져 있음을 암시한다. 김은주 작가는 이 순환의 리듬을 통해 ‘공전’의 시간을 시각화하고, 그 속에서 관객이 스스로의 내면적 빛과 마주할 수 있도록 초대한다. 이 전시는 ‘보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것’, ‘물질과 비물질’, ‘나와 타자’를 잇는 감각적 다리이며, 그 위에서 우리는 서로를 비추는 존재로 다시 태어난다.
