CHOI&CHOI Gallery presents Distance from Zero by Sohyun Ban at the Michael Horbach Foundation in Cologne. This marks the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery following the start of her representation, and her first presentation in Germany.

 

The exhibition presents a new series of paintings by Sohyun Ban. In her works, she examines how an image comes into being and how our perception shifts depending on the distance from which we view it. From afar, her paintings appear as calm, poetic landscapes. As viewers move closer, spontaneous brushstrokes, rough lines, and seemingly unordered traces emerge. The same image thus unfolds as two entirely different scenes.

 

At first glance, the works are often characterized by beauty and a decorative quality. Upon closer inspection, however, incomplete lines and open areas become visible. The artist does not conceal these traces. On the contrary, she intentionally leaves them visible to show that a painting emerges through many steps, revisions, and decisions.

 

The exhibition title Distance from Zero begins with the question: “At what distance do we encounter truth?” For Sohyun Ban, the empty canvas is the “point of zero” – the moment before a painting begins. It is a state in which nothing has yet been determined and everything seems possible. Overlapping marks, scratches, and corrections remain visible on the surface, becoming a record of the time the artist has physically spent before the canvas.

 

The work suggests that the way we perceive and judge something can never be absolute. A Is the chaotic network of lines we see up close less “true” than the harmonious landscape perceived from a distance? Or do both impressions equally belong to the image? Through these questions, the artist does not attempt to establish a dichotomy between right and wrong. Rather, she is interested in the many differences and perspectives that exist between these two poles.

초이앤초이 갤러리는 반소현의 개인전 《Distance from Zero: 아무것도 아닌 곳에서》를 독일 쾰른 미하엘 호어바흐 재단에서 개최한다. 이번 전시는 반소현이 초이앤초이 갤러리 전속작가로서 처음 선보이는 독일 개인전으로, 회화가 만들어지는 과정과 거리에 따라 달라지는 시각적 경험을 중심으로 한 최근 회화 연작을 소개한다. 멀리서는 서정적인 풍경으로, 가까이에서는 즉흥적인 붓질과 거친 선들로, 같은 화면이 전혀 다른 두 장면으로 펼쳐진다.

 

예쁨과 장식성은 관객을 유혹하는 첫 번째 시선에 가깝다. 그 아래에는 의도적으로 불완전하고 가공되지 않은 선들이 자리한다. 작가는 이 두 층위를 감추지 않고 함께 드러냄으로써, 회화란 과정이 겹겹이 쌓여 완성된 결과물이라는 것을 보여준다.

 

전시 제목 《Distance from Zero》는 “우리는 어느 거리에서 진실을 마주하게 되는가”라는 질문에서 출발한다. 반소현에게 텅 빈 캔버스는 아직 아무것도 아닌 ‘0의 지점’, 즉 모든 가능성이 열려 있는 출발점이고 무에서 시작하기 전의 떨림을 의미한다. 덧칠되고 긁히고 수정된 흔적들은 지워지지 않고 화면 위에 그대로 남아, 작가가 캔버스 앞에서 실제로 겪은 시간의 기록이 된다.

 

이렇듯 텅 빈 캔버스에서 시작된 작업은, 우리가 무언가를 바라보고 판단하는 방식이 결코 절대적일 수 없다는 것을 시사해 준다. 가까이서 본 무질서한 선들과 거친 흔적이 틀린 것인지, 혹은 멀리서 본 조화로운 풍경만이 옳은 것인지. 작가는 이 물음을 통해 옳고 그름의 이분법이 아니라 그 사이에 존재하는 무수한 차이와 거리를 인정하고자 한다.
