Inspired by Architecture and Literature, Edward Hopper and an acute fascination with cinema, Christina Sun (b. 1999) is a Sydney based painter who renders imaginary scenes which magnify the ambience of spatial moments.
For Sun, the frame is a seamless continuation of borders between portal and landscape. The framing function – which is an attempt to make sense of the world – frequently appears in her oil paintings address the duality of sensual and intellectual information.
Interweaving figurative elements with fragmented geometry, the painter lingers on the mundane, offering prolonged observations of everyday life. Sun explores transitory and interstitial spaces, driven by a curiosity to understand how an image is filtered through embodied experiences shaped by cultural, historical, and impersonal contexts.
Some oil paintings are characterised by the tension between proximity and distance. Others seemingly blend autobiographical experiences and fiction to depict people in multilayered settings: isolated figures within surreal, familiar and mundane landscapes which are emblematic to contemporary life and cultural phenomena.
Hui Yuan Christina Sun lives and works in Sydney, Australia. She holds a Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Honours I), from the University of Sydney and further exchange studies at Tokyo University of Arts, Japan. Her paintings are held in private collections across Australia and Singapore.
