YoungWook Choi

Karma series, which Choi has devoted himself to for over fifteen years, stemmed from the artist’s wish to resemble the very simple yet sophisticated character of the moon-jar. The cracks or lines on the surface of the porcelain, that he draws one by one, symbolize the relationships and different paths in our lives. Choi chose the image of the moon-jar as the medium of communication. The lines that separate yet continue, appear similar but different, and ultimately converge are all stories of our lives. The act of drawing these lines reflects and embodies the artist’s personal narrative and extends to the viewers, fostering a dialogue about individual experiences and memories.

최영욱 작가의 Karma 연작은 지극히 소박하면서도 세련된 달항아리를 닮고 싶다는 작가의 바램을 바탕으로 도자기 표면의 빙열을 우리의 인생길에 빗대어 표현한다. 작가는 달항아리라는 이미지를 소통의 매개체로 선택하였다. 갈라지면서 이어지고, 비슷한 듯하며 다르지만 결국 하나로 어우러지는 선들은 곧 우리 모두의 삶의 이야기이기도 하다. 작가 본인의 이야기를 선을 긋는 행위로 녹여냄으로써 시작된 대화는 작품을 감상하는 모든 이의 삶의 이야기와도 이어진다.
