Yeji Seok

Yeji Seok, through monumental portraits and relief works resembling ancient masonry, captures the fleeting moments encountered by various figures placed in the midst of events that are simultaneously mundane and surreal. Bodies swept up by swirling air, currents, or gravity are grotesquely contorted or elongated, while the pupils of distorted faces remain dilated.
Amidst the intensity of these events, the physical characteristics of figures stripped of their personae are laid bare. Through such dramatic staging, the artist partially peels away the social protective layer of the subjects, revealing the very nature of human as biological entity. By her image of an infinitely oscillating “in-between state,” Seok seeks to portray beings possessing an identity that reveals itself through the process of “becoming,” constantly shifting according to environment and emotion.

석예지는 거대한 인물화와 고대 석조를 닮은 부조 작업 등을 통해 다분히 일상적인 동시에 초현실적이기도 한 사건의 한복판에 놓인 인물이 맞닥뜨린 찰나를 냉정하게 생포한다. 휘몰아치는 대기와 물살, 또는 중력에 휩쓸린 신체는 기괴하게 구부러지거나 늘어지고, 일그러진 얼굴의 동공은 확장되어 있다.
마주한 사건의 격렬함 속에서 페르소나를 잃은 인물들의 신체적 특징이 낱낱이 드러난다. 이와 같은 극적인 연출을 통해 작가는 인물에게서 사회적 보호막을 반쯤 벗겨내고, 그 아래 숨겨진 생물학적 존재로서의 인간을 밝혀낸다. 석예지는 무한히 진동하는 ‘중간상태(in-between state)’의 이미지를 구현함으로써 ‘환
경과 감정에 따라 계속 변하는 되기(becoming)의 과정으로 드러나는 정체성’을 지닌 존재들을 그리려 한다.
