Xooang Choi(b. 1975) has been creating works that unfold various phenomena arising in the relationship between individuals and society through realistic depictions of the human body. His works possess the power to evoke tactile sensations that resonate thoroughly with viewers’ hearts, prompting them to reflect on the world they live in and the situations they find themselves in. In the recent works, Choi examines the process of actively embracing various intermediate parameters within the artwork, moving away from a subjective position of making sculptural decisions to expand concepts and forms encompassing regions, histories, places, and memories.
최수앙(b. 1975)은 개인과 사회의 관계 안에서 야기되는 다양한 현상을 사실적인 인체의 형상을 통해 풀어낸 작업을 해왔다. 그의 작품은 보는 이로 하여금 피부로 와닿는 촉각적 자극과 함께 자신들이 살아가는 세계와 자신이 처한 상황을 되돌아보게 하는 힘을 가지고 있다. 최근 작업에서 작가는 조형적인 의사 결정을 하는 주체적 위치에서 내려와, 형상을 넘어 여러 중간 매개 변수의 역할을 작품 안으로 능동적으로 수용하는 과정을 살피고 있으며, 지역, 역사, 장소, 기억 등을 포괄하는 개념과 형식을 확장 하고 있다. 2016년 이전 극사실적 인체 조각 연작들이 개인의 삶과 사회적 규범 사이에서 경험하는 감정의 서사들과 그 무게를 구체적인 흔적으로 집요하게 재현하는 ‘명사’로서의 조각이었다면 이후부터 최근까지 진행해 오고 있는 연작들은 표면에 드러난 단단한 흔적들 너머의 근원적 요인과 변화의 잠재 가능성, 변형의 과정 등을 두루 살피면서 그 유동성을 인체에 기반하되 추상적인 형식으로 만들어가고 있다.
