Toshimitsu Imai (1928 – 2002)
Toshimitsu Imai was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1928. After studying at the Tokyo State Art Academy. He moved to Paris in 1952. Imai met Michel Tapié, Sam Francis, Jean Dubuffet and George Mathieu in Paris and was influenced by the Art Informel movement. He introduced the Art Informel in Japan and he is considered to be one of the faces of the Gutai movement. Toshimitsu Imai paintings constitute a sumptuous material and colour in which heavy matière is covered with delicate lines.
