Tina Braegger
Tina Braegger is a conceptual artist exploring themes of originality, reproduction, authenticity, repetition, and difference. Since 2017, she has focused on the “dancing bear,” a bootleg drawing emblematic of The Grateful Dead. Braegger’s interest in the bear transcends the band’s music, engaging with how this counterfeit symbol challenges notions of official and unofficial, original and copy. In her latest series, the bear reflects on artmaking processes and being a painter. “Admin Reveal, 2023,” a self-portrait, features a bear with an oversize snout brandishing paintbrushes. The work, like others in the exhibition, oscillates between sincerity and sardonic undertones, with sinuous eyelashes partially concealing the creature’s self-pitying gaze.
