Minamikawa’s recent paintings consider the spectre and the introduction of afterimage. Muted in palette, minimal in mark, the new paintings produce an affective quality previously first suggested in Minamikawa’s practice in the 2021 exhibition, “Moves”; an affect dependent upon distance and born from the gap of the in-between; both literal and psychic. Minamikawa also continues to playfully respond to the refined context of his present environs, Kyoto, with a highly controlled erasure and paint in spray – a non-calligraphic.
