Moon Kyu Hwa
Moon Kyuhwa (b. 1990) is a painter who explores emotional and sensory experiences through the observation of microcosmic existences and atmospheric phenomena. Her work captures the subtle changes in her surroundings, translating the passage of time and emotions into a distinct pictorial language. In her early practice, she focused on familiar objects encountered in daily life, treating them not merely as subjects of observation but as intermediaries for engaging with the world and reflecting her inner state. These visual experiences were expressed through abstraction, simplified forms, and gestural brushstrokes rather than representational renderings. Recently, Moon has expanded her gaze to the sky, investigating the relationship between weather and emotional perception. She explores how atmospheric shifts influence human emotions and physical sensations, materializing ephemeral phenomena into textural gestures. Elements such as the sun, clouds, and rain in the paintings function as both reflections of emotions and their interactive presence with the artist. Moon constructs a unique visual language through painting that interweaves external landscapes with internal sensibilities, transforming physical scenery into a realm of emotional resonance.
Moon Kyuhwa received her M.F.A. from the Korea National University of Arts. She has held five solo exhibitions, beginning with her debut at Project Kyungsung Textile (2018, Seoul), followed by shows at Gallery Gabi (2019, Seoul), The Blue Gallery (2022, Seoul), Drawing Room (2023, Seoul), and Gallery SP (2025, Seoul). She has also participated in seven group exhibitions, including a showcase at Jang Ucchin Museum of Art, and recently exhibited at the 2023 Jeonnam International Ink Biennale.
