Michael Conrads

Michael Conrads (b. 1977) is a painter currently based in Berlin and Mexico City. Working from a visual language that combines everyday imagery with symbolic elements, he develops a practice that fluidly moves between figuration and abstraction. Traces and layers on the surface reveal an accumulation of time and sensation, while the tension between intuitive brushwork and restrained composition presents the formation and dissolution of images as a painterly event. Figures, objects, and architectural fragments appear intermittently within his works, yet rather than conveying a fixed narrative, they leave room for multiple interpretations. This indeterminacy emphasizes the materiality and flatness of painting, while a controlled palette and repetitive structuring generate a subtle rhythm across the surface. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and established his practice within the context of contemporary German painting. Since then, he has held solo and group exhibitions across major European cities including Berlin, Cologne, and Düsseldorf.
