Leeje

Leeje (b. 1979) focuses on urban life and the people around her, capturing scenes she encounters daily: city landscapes in the midst of development, self-portraits in desolate construction sites with her clothes pulled up to her shoulders, and streetlights brightening the way home from work. She also portrays people gathered around dinner tables, emphasizing moments that often go unnoticed. Through these works, Leeje highlights disappearing landscapes and overlooked individuals. Although sometimes categorized as a Post-Minjung artist, her approach does not focus on critique. Instead, she uses an affectionate gaze to explore her subjects, conveying memories, emotions, solidarity, and friendship through her art.

Her work has been featured in several solo exhibitions, including shows at A-Lounge Contemporary, Seoul (2023); Space Sansumunwha, Seoul (2021); Chosun Gallery, Seoul (2017, 2014); OCI Museum of Art, Seoul (2010); and Alternative Space Loop, Seoul (2006). Leeje is also an active participant in group exhibitions, with notable appearances in Walkie Talkie Shaking at Art Space Boan, Seoul (2022); With Nature: Still Life and Landscape at Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul (2020); The Funeral Growing Everyday at Post Territory Ujeongguk, Seoul (2019); Twin Peaks at HITE Collection, Seoul (2016); Sixth Sense at OCI Museum of Art, Seoul (2015); Spectators at Doosan Gallery, Seoul (2014); Do Window Vol. 4 at Gallery Hyundai, Seoul (2012); Painters at PKM Gallery, Seoul (2011); and Intuition at Hakgojae Gallery, Seoul (2010).

Leeje received her BA and MA in Fine Art from Kookmin University and currently lives and works in Seoul. In 2019, she was one of three artists selected for the prestigious Chong Kun Dang Art Award, a program supporting creative artists.

이제(b.1979)는 도시적 일상과 주변의 인물들을 회화의 소재로 채택해 자신이 바라보는 것을 그림으로 그린다. 그 중에서도 곧 사라져 갈 풍경들이나 눈에 띄진 않지만 어디선가 자신의 몫을 살아가고 있는 존재들을 회화의 주된 대상으로 삼아 왔다. 예컨대, 재개발이 한창인 도시 풍경, 삭막한 공사장 한가운데서 상의를 어깨까지 들어 올린 자화상, 그리고 퇴근길의 어둠을 밝히는 전봇대나 저녁 식탁 앞에 두런두런 모인 군중 등을 작업의 주제로 채택했다. 이러한 면에서 이제는 포스트 민중미술 작가로 분류되기도 하지만, 비판적 시선 대신 애정 어린 눈길로 대상을 담아내며 회화적 정경을 미학적인 범주 안에서 모색하고자 하는 작가적 태도를 앞세워 왔다. 이제는 그로써 기억과 정서, 연대와 우정을 담을 수 있는 회화의 가능성을 실험하며 화가로서 세상과의 관계를 형성하고자 시도한다.

에이라운지, 서울(2023), 산수문화, 서울(2021), 갤러리조선, 서울(2017, 2014), OCI 미술관, 서울(2010), 대안공간 루프, 서울(2006) 등에서 개인전을 가졌고 «워키토키쉐이킹», 보안여관, 서울(2022); «자연을 들이다: 풍경과 정물», 서울시립 북서울미술관, 서울 (2020); «날마다 자라나는 장례식», 탈영역 우정국, 서울(2019), «트윈 픽스», 하이트컬렉션, 서울(2016); «육감», OCI 미술관, 서울(2015); «관람자들», 두산아트센터, 서울(2014); «Do Window Vol.4», 갤러리현대, 서울(2012); «페인터즈», PKM 갤러리, 서울(2011); «직관», 학고재, 서울(2010) 등 단체전도 활발히 참가해왔다.

국민대학교 회화과에서 학사 및 석사를 졸업하였고 현재 서울에 거주하며 활발히 활동 중이다. 2019년에는 매년 3명의 회화 작가를 선정하여 창작 활동을 지원하는 종근당 예술지상에 작가로 선정된 바 있다.
