Klaus Merkel

Klaus Merkel (b.1953) has spent over three decades relentlessly exploring the complex challenges inherent in painting. He tackles themes such as color and contrast, form and ground, and realism and abstraction—subjects that defy complete resolution through traditional methods. Through his experimental exhibition strategies and a distinctive painterly approach, Merkel creates fresh visual experiences and proposes new possibilities for two-dimensional art. Based in Germany, he continues to investigate the potential and sustainability of painting, even in the face of the crises confronting contemporary art and ideology.

His recent solo exhibitions include Klaus Merkel: Touretten (Galerie Max Mayer, Düsseldorf, Germany, 2025), shrunken (Nicolas Krupp, Basel, Switzerland, 2021), and struldbrugs (Kienzle Foundation, Berlin, Germany, 2021). Major group shows featuring his work include True Grit (Linn Lühn, Düsseldorf, Germany, 2024) and Real Abstraction (Temples, Los Angeles, USA, 2024). Since 2009, Merkel has served as a Professor of Painting at Kunstakademie Münster, and he has also held a guest professorship at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in France.

클라우스 메켈(b.1953)은 30년 넘게 회화가 가진 복합적 문제들을 끊임없이 탐구해 온 작가다. 그는 색채와 대비, 형태와 바탕, 구상과 추상 등 전통적인 방식으로는 완전히 해결되기 어려운 주제를 다룬다. 실험적인 전시 구성과 독창적인 회화적 태도는 새로운 시각적 경험을 이끌어내며 평면 예술의 새로운 가능성을 제안한다. 현재 독일에서 활동 중인 메켈은 동시대 예술 환경과 이념이 직면한 위기 속에서도, 회화가 지닌 잠재력과 지속성을 꾸준히 모색하고 있다.
