Jonghyun Park’s practice investigates the residual traces of individual and collective trauma through the medium of painting. His work interrogates the clustered state of imagery, positioning painting as a site for symptomatic expression rather than mere representation. By navigating the interstices between narrative structures and the pictorial surface, Park critically engages with the historical and conventional frameworks that define contemporary painting.
His work addresses the conceptual and ontological dilemmas inherent in contemporary painting, expanding its linguistic potential while questioning the limitations of visual representation. Rather than a straightforward depiction, his canvases function as arenas for examining the conditions of image production and reception. By deconstructing the relationships between signifier and signified, surface and depth, representation and abstraction, Park emphasises the discursive nature of painting, establishing a nuanced dialogue between visuality and conceptual inquiry.
