Jonghyun Park

Jonghyun Park’s practice revolves around the pursuit of visual traces that reveal both personal memory and the collective wounds and traumas embedded within them. His interest lies in how these traces relate to the clustered states of imagery surrounding painting as a medium, which he approaches through what he terms a “symptomatic” mode of painting—rich in metaphor and representation. Park explores the narrative potential of images, as well as the interstitial space between the image as ‘surface’ and the conceptual weight it carries. His inquiry is closely tied to questions of pictorial representation and the conventions of painting itself. More broadly, he seeks to engage, through his work, with the discourses and challenges that contemporary painting now faces. His exhibitions articulate a painterly position that comments upon the history of painting’s repression and return, situating his practice within this critical lineage.

박종현 작가는 본인의 기억을 포함하거나 둘러싼 집단의 내상과 상흔을 드러내는 시각 문화의 흔적을 추적하고, 이를 매체로서의 회화를 에워싼 이미지의 군집 상태와 연결시키며 ‘징후적’ 회화로써 은유하고 표상 하는데에 관심을 두고 있다. 또한 이미지가 품을 수 있는 서사와, ‘표면’으로서의 이미지 사이의 행간을 탐구하고 이를 회화의 ‘재현’에 관한 질문, 회화의 관습에 관한 질문과 잇는다. 나아가 동시대 회화가 봉착한 문제와 이를 둘러싼 담론들에 작업으로써 개입하고자 하며, 회화의 억압과 귀환의 역사에 첨언하는 태도를 가지고, 작가 본인의 회화적 입장을 밝히는 전시를 만드는 데에 관심이 있다.
