Han Sungwoo
Han Sungwoo (b. 1987) paints the everyday spaces and mundane scenery he encounters, but his focus goes beyond the surface. He “sees” what lies behind: empty places that were once full, the remnants of time on worn walls and floors, even the marks on his own body. He is drawn to spaces and objects that have lost their original meaning or purpose. This unseen, backstage quality of his subjects allows him to infuse his work with personal subjectivity and emotion, creating not what is there but how he experiences it. His canvas is no longer a place to simply recreate reality—it becomes a space where his mind and vision intersect, dismantling and reconstructing what he sees through his own lens. Lately, he has been exploring different ways of representation by painting the same object in both figurative and abstract forms.
Solo exhibitions of Han Sungwoo’s work have been held at A-Lounge Contemporary, Seoul, Korea (2022, 2017); Songeun Art Cube, Seoul, Korea (2020); and Willing N Dealing, Seoul, Korea (2013). His work has also been featured in selected group exhibitions, including Endless, Nameless at Helen J Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2023); Books and Things at Helen J Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2022); Summer Love at Songeun, Seoul, Korea (2022); Anamorphose: Depict but Blurry, Distant but Vivid at WESS, Seoul, Korea (2020); Unfolded Dice at A-Lounge, Seoul, Korea (2019); and Dramatic Scenes at Space K, Seoul, Korea (2017). He has participated in residencies at the Nanji Residency of the Seoul Museum of Art(2023) and Goyang Residency program at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(2024)
한성우(b.1987)는 매일 마주하는 일상의 풍경이나 장소를 주제로 작업을 한다. 그러나 대상 그 자체를 재현하는 대신, 인적이 사라진 공간이나 오래된 벽과 바닥, 혹은 신체에 남겨진 흔적 등 전경에 가려진 이면에 더 관심을 둔다. 작가는 기존의 의미나 용도가 사라진 자리에 개인의 주관적 감상을 투영해 눈앞의 풍경을 해체하고 다시 조합하는 방식으로 자신이 세상을 인식하는 방식을 재현하고자 한다. 2020년부터는 유행이 지나 사람들에게 외면받는 꽃무늬 벽지나 고정되지 않는 시간으로서의 환절기를 주제로 점차 추상화된 화면을 구축해왔다. 근래에는 다양한 매체를 활용하여 작가 특유의 마티에르(matière)를 보다 얕게 얹거나, 같은 대상을 두고 구상에서 추상까지 여러 캔버스에 나누어 작업해보는 등 재현의 방식을 다양화하고 있다.
에이라운지, 서울(2023, 2017); 송은아트큐브, 서울(2020); Space BM, 서울(2015); 윌링앤딜링, 서울(2013) 등에서 개인전을 가졌으며, «Books and Things», Helen J Gallery, 로스앤젤레스(2022); «Summer Love», 송은, 서울(2022); «몸짓을 따라가며, 주변을 배회하고, 중심에 다가서려는», 학고재 청담, 서울(2020); «Dramatic Scenes», 스페이스K, 과천(2017) 등 국내외의 전시 공간에서 열리는 유수의 단체전에 참여했다. 2023년에는 난지미술창작스튜디오의 프로그램에 참여했으며 2024년에는 국립현대미술관 고양 레지던시에 입주했다.
