Swoon (Caledonia Curry) has an artistic practice that is rooted in humanistic values and resonates globally by connecting deeply with people and their stories. Over the years, her work has spanned continents, including projects in Belgium, France, Haiti, Italy, Mexico, and the United States. Through street art, humanitarian efforts, and large-scale installations, Curry engages with human experiences and the cultural nuances of each place she visits. Her ability to respond to the essence of a location makes her work both universally relatable and deeply personal.

Curry’s connection to Bangkok began with her fascination with its “ad hoc urbanism”—an improvisational urban design born of necessity and creativity. This aesthetic inspired her project Swimming Cities of Serenissima (2009), a fleet of sculptural junk rafts used to sail into the Venice Biennale. With “Homecoming”, Curry returns to Bangkok for a major survey of her evolving practice, exploring themes of personal transformation, collective memory, and the natural world.

The exhibition features Cicada (2020), a seminal piece marking a turning point in Curry’s work, incorporating stop-motion puppetry and video art to explore metamorphosis as a metaphor for healing and growth. Inspired by the cicada’s lifecycle, this piece reflects Curry’s personal journey of confronting trauma and finding renewal.

Additional works in Homecoming were created during a residency with SAC Gallery in Chiang Mai, using materials salvaged from the city’s severe flooding. Curry also revisited traditional printmaking at Hello, Print Friend Studios, reconnecting with a medium central to her early career as a street artist in New York City.

For Curry, Homecoming is both a return to Bangkok and a debut for Asian audiences. The exhibition celebrates her ability to illuminate the complexities of human experience, her healing journey, and the shifting landscapes of the world.
