The Blade of the Forest Within

Gana Art presents The Blade of the Forest Within, the first solo exhibition in Korea by Kawauchi Rikako, an artist recognized for her ongoing exploration of the boundaries between body and mind, and between interior and exterior. Kawauchi develops a distinct painterly language through the physical process of layering thick pigment and incising into the surface, allowing images to emerge through a balance of control and immediacy. Following her participation in a group exhibition at Gana Art Center in 2023, this exhibition marks her first solo presentation in Korea, bringing together approximately thirty paintings and drawings—including new large-scale works—across Gana Art Hannam and Gana Art Namsan.

In Kawauchi’s paintings, fruits and vegetables, plants, animals, organs, and fragments of the human body are brought together within a single canvas. These elements appear both as discrete entities and as interconnected structures, often visually shifting between different figurations—roots resemble veins, plant forms echo muscles, and animal bodies recall internal organs—forming a dense visual field where these associations overlap. Built up through dense applications of predominantly red pigment and incised with a painting knife, the surface holds a dense material presence, with images emerging along the incised marks. The imagery hovers between landscape and interior bodily space, making it difficult to determine whether one is looking at a forest or something within the body. Kawauchi approaches the body not as a fixed structure, but as a space in flux—one that continuously absorbs, processes, and transforms what lies outside it. The title The Blade of the Forest Within evokes a latent force running through these forms.

Presented across two venues, the exhibition frames the artist’s practice through two distinct yet interconnected approaches. At Gana Art Hannam, the presentation centers on internal bodily processes and their resonance with natural form, bringing together works derived from observations of nature. At Gana Art Namsan, the focus turns to the body as it is shaped through its relationship with others, foregrounding its external dimension. While each space unfolds from a different perspective, both remain grounded in Kawauchi’s sustained interest in the shifting boundary between inside and outside.

가나아트는 일본 현대미술계에서 주목받는 여성 작가 가와우치 리카코(Kawauchi Rikako, b.1990)의 국내 첫 개인전 《The Blade of the Forest Within》을 개최한다. 가와우치는 신체와 정신, 내부와 외부 사이의 경계를 탐구하는 작업을 지속해왔으며, 강렬한 색채와 두터운 마티에르를 긁어내 형상을 구축하는 방식을 통해 고유의 조형 언어를 드러낸다. 이번 전시는 작가가 2023년 가나아트센터에서 열린 그룹전에 참여한 이후 국내에서 처음 선보이는 개인전으로, 대형 신작을 포함한 회화와 드로잉 30여 점을 가나아트 한남과 가나아트 남산 두 공간에 걸쳐 선보인다.

가와우치의 회화에는 과일과 채소, 야자수, 재규어와 개미핥기, 심장과 같은 장기, 부유하는 머리에 이르기까지 이질적인 형상들이 단일한 장면 안에 병치되며 구성된다. 이때 식물의 줄기와 뿌리는 근육이나 핏줄을, 동물의 형상은 인간의 장기를 연상시키며 서로 다른 신체 감각을 교차시킨다. 이러한 형상들은 적색 계열의 물감과 안료를 거칠게 얹어 밀어 올린 화면 속에서 서로 맞물리며, 그것이 숲의 풍경인지 혹은 신체의 내부인지 가늠하기 어려운 경계가 모호한 하나의 공간을 형성한다. 이처럼 가와우치는 몸의 내면을 거대한 야생의 ‘숲’과 같은 공간으로 바라본다. 전시 제목 《The Blade of the Forest Within》은 이러한 운동에 깃든 힘과 그 안에 잠재된 날것의 강인함을 함축한다.

두 공간에서 동시에 진행되는 이번 개인전은 서로 다른 접근을 통해 작가의 작업을 입체적으로 조망한다. 가나아트 한남에서는 작가가 집중하고 있는 신체 내부의 순환과 자연의 이미지에 주목하며, 이를 회화적으로 풀어낸 작업이 중심을 이룬다. 한편 가나아트 남산에서는 신체의 외부, 즉 타자와의 관계 속에서 형성되고 인식되는 존재로서의 신체에 주목한다. 두 공간은 신체 내부의 감각과 외부와의 관계라는 상이한 층위를 따라 전개되지만, 그 경계가 흐려지는 지점을 향한 가와우치의 시선은 일관되게 이어진다.
