ANNA LEONHARDT: LIEBESBILDER

A love song does not tell stories; it creates resonance, conveys moods, and leaves space for interpretation and personal feeling. It touches us directly and empathetically. In her Love Paintings, Anna Leonhardt (born 1981 in Pforzheim, lives in Berlin and New York) invites viewers into a comparable world of resonance. Like a song, her works sound through color, movement, and surface – sometimes delicate, sometimes dense and vibrant – conveying moods without naming them.
The paintings emerge through a physical, gestural process: color is moved, layered, and modeled; lines and planes enter into dialogue, dissolve, and condense. Between control and intuition, between order and dissolution, a space arises that does not illustrate feelings but embodies them – a resonance space of inner movement.
Themes such as closeness and distance, surrender, vulnerability, desire become palpable without being literal. The canvas remains permeable to memory, projection, and personal sensation. In this openness lies the distinctive power of the series: it bridges the personal and the universal.
Leonhardt’s painting exists in a lively dialogue with the history of abstraction: the gestural energy of Willem de Kooning, the meditative sense of space of Lee Ufan, and the structural rigor of Niele Toroni are all reflected, alongside elements of European Informel and Color Field painting. All of this is transformed into a distinctive, contemporary language: color, light, and structure become carriers of both inner and collective resonance.
The Love Paintings demonstrate that painting today can work like music: making moods, movement, and presence immediately tangible. Anna Leonhardt is recognized as one of the most significant voices in contemporary abstract painting; her works receive international attention.
